Metabase is our default BI recommendation for growth-stage clients, and it's not close. The visual query builder means non-technical team members can ask questions of their data without writing SQL — and the self-hosted open-source version means clients can run real analytics without a BI budget line item. We've deployed it more times than any other analytics tool.

Key Features

Visual Query Builder for Non-Technical Teams
Click to select, filter, group, and summarize — no SQL required. Teams go from asking the data person to self-service in a week.
Free Self-Hosted Open Source
A $10/month server runs Metabase for 10-20 people. Connected to BigQuery, it replaces $5,000+/month enterprise BI tools.
Metabase lacks a semantic layer.
Unlike Looker's LookML, there's no centralized place to define business logic, metric definitions, or calculated fields that persist across all dashboards.
Metabase is our default visualization layer.
Standard setup: BigQuery (data warehouse) plus dbt (transformations) plus Metabase (dashboards). We self-host on the same infrastructure as n8n for most clients.

JMK Ventures Perspective

Metabase is our default BI recommendation for growth-stage clients, and it's not close. The visual query builder means non-technical team members can ask questions of their data without writing SQL — and the self-hosted open-source version means clients can run real analytics without a BI budget line item. We've deployed it more times than any other analytics tool.

Where It Excels

The visual query builder is Metabase's defining feature. Click to select a table, filter, group, and summarize — no SQL required. For growth-stage companies where the CEO wants to check revenue trends or the marketing lead wants to see campaign performance, this accessibility is transformative. We've seen teams go from "ask the data person" to self-service analytics within a week of Metabase deployment.

Self-hosting the open-source version costs nothing beyond a small server. A $10/month DigitalOcean droplet runs Metabase comfortably for teams of 10-20 people. Connected to BigQuery, it gives clients a BI stack that would cost $5,000+/month with enterprise tools. The embedding feature (even in open source) also lets clients surface dashboards in their own products.

Where It Falls Short

Metabase's open-source version lacks row-level permissions, SSO, and some enterprise security features. For clients who need granular data access controls, the Pro plan at $85/month for 5 users (or self-hosted Pro at $500/month) adds up. The visual query builder also has limits — complex multi-table joins, window functions, and advanced analytics require switching to SQL mode.

The dashboard customization options are more limited than enterprise BI tools. You can't build pixel-perfect reports, and the formatting options for charts are basic compared to Looker or Tableau. For clients who need polished, executive-ready reports, Metabase's aesthetics may not be sufficient.

How JMK Uses It

Metabase is our default BI layer. We deploy it alongside BigQuery in most Data Engineering and Analytics engagements. Standard setup: self-hosted open-source on DigitalOcean, connected to BigQuery, with pre-built dashboards for the client's key metrics. We train clients to build their own questions using the visual query builder and create SQL-based dashboards for more complex analytics.

Who It's Right For

  • Growth-stage companies that need real BI without enterprise BI budgets.
  • Teams with non-technical stakeholders who need to explore data without SQL.
  • Companies running on BigQuery or PostgreSQL who want a fast, lightweight analytics layer.
  • Organizations that want to embed dashboards in their own products.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

  • Enterprise organizations with 50+ analytics users needing governed metrics — Looker provides the semantic layer they need.
  • Teams that need advanced data visualization (maps, complex charts, custom visualizations) — Tableau is more capable.
  • Companies that need pixel-perfect executive reporting — Metabase's formatting is functional, not polished.
