Who it is for

Built for these roles

Bookkeepers, controllers, payroll and AP/AR administrators, office managers who keep the books, and finance leads at Massachusetts companies with 5 to 100 employees.

Prerequisites: Comfort with Excel. No programming background needed.

Cohort
Up to 8 trainees, two-seat minimum

Learning outcomes

What your team can do by the last session.

Reconcile exports from payroll, accounting and operational systems with AI assistance
Build and check a weekly or monthly management report
Draft variance explanations from report data
Catch exceptions before they post, such as duplicate IDs, zero or placeholder values and outdated distribution lists
Keep report constants, recipients and rules in one documented place
Apply data-handling rules for financial and employee information
Session by session

Each session is a lesson, then hands-on practice.

Every exercise uses the same standardized practice material, so nobody works on live company data during the course. Applying the method to your own business comes after.

Session 1How AI tools handle financial data, where they fail, and the data-handling rules. Then a first structured comparison of the practice payroll register and ledger export.
Session 2Matching keys, tolerances and exception lists. Then reconciling the payroll register to the general ledger and producing an exception list.
Session 3Building and checking a management report and drafting variance explanations. Then the monthly report with a variance narrative tied to source figures.
Session 4Pre-posting exception checks and keeping rules in one documented place. Then adding those checks and a single rules file to the practice report.
Session 5Capstone: each participant builds one reconciliation and one governed monthly report, reviewed against the rubric with written feedback.
Capstone

How the work is checked

Each participant's capstone is reviewed against a written rubric, and everyone gets written feedback.

  • The reconciliation ties out
  • Planted exceptions are flagged
  • Rules and recipients are documented in one place
  • No restricted data is used
Scope

What the course is not

  • Not self-paced. Every hour is live and instructor-led.
  • Does not include AI tool licenses, subscriptions or software access.
  • Not an assessment, implementation, advisory or coaching engagement, and not bundled with one.
  • Not work on your own systems or data. That happens after the course, and it is where JMK Ventures can help.
Paying for it in Massachusetts

  • The application is due at least 21 days before the first session, with a DOR Certificate of Good Standing, a DUA Certificate of Compliance and a W-9.
  • This course is not approved yet, so employers cannot apply for it today.

15 minute eligibility check

Tell us your state. We tell you what it pays.

Every state has its own checklist, so the form asks where you are first. Send it and we come back within one business day with what your state's program covers, whether your team qualifies, and the dates you have to hit.

  • You are a private employer with W-2 employees in your state
  • The people you would train are on your payroll, not owners, 1099 contractors or temps
  • You can pay the course invoice first and be reimbursed by the state
  • Training can happen on paid time, at regular wages
  • You can wait out your state's lead time before the first session
More than 100 employees, or in a state marked limited? Send the form anyway. Several states have a second route for larger employers, and we will tell you if one applies to you.

See if your team qualifies

Takes about a minute. We reply within one business day.

More than 100 employees puts some programs out of reach, but not all of them. Massachusetts, for one, has a General Program for larger employers with a 1-to-1 match. Send the form and we will route you.

No cost and no obligation. Help with the application is free, and you file it. Approval is decided by your state's program and is not guaranteed.
