Massachusetts reimburses up to 100% of live AI training for Brockton employers with 100 or fewer employees: up to $3,000 per employee and $15,000 per company per year. You pay first, then get reimbursed if approved.
Brockton earned the name City of Champions in the boxing ring, but its economy has always been carried by small employers. First it was the shoe factories. Now it is the contractors, home service companies, medical offices, distributors and manufacturers spread across the city and along Route 24. Many are family-owned, with a few dozen people on payroll and an office staff of three or four keeping everything moving.
That is the size of company the Workforce Training Fund Express Program is for. If you have 100 or fewer Massachusetts W-2 employees, the state reimburses up to 100% of an approved course, up to $3,000 per employee per course and $15,000 per company per calendar year. You pay the tuition first. The Commonwealth pays you back after the course, if your application is approved.
None of that takes a developer. It takes the people who already do the work learning, in a live, instructor-led course, how to put AI tools to work on their own tasks. The course is ten hours of instruction spread over four or five weeks, so the phones still get answered.
One thing family businesses should know up front: owners cannot be counted as trainees, and neither can 1099 subcontractors. Your W-2 office manager, dispatcher, estimator and bookkeeper can. The full rules, caps and paperwork are on our Massachusetts AI training grants page.
AI for Field Service and Trades Businesses is the natural starting point for any Brockton company that sends trucks out every morning. It is the match for the office and field staff who handle dispatch, estimates, change orders and customer follow-up. It runs 2 hours a week for 5 weeks, with up to 8 trainees.
AI for Finance, Accounting and Payroll Teams fits the bookkeeper or controller at a distributor, manufacturer or multi-crew contractor who spends the first days of every month on reconciliations, job costing and payroll prep. The format is the same: five weekly sessions of 2 hours, with room for 8 trainees.
AI Enablement for Small Business Teams is the general option. Pick it for a medical practice front desk, a family-owned retailer or any mixed office team that needs shared ground rules before anything specialized.
All five courses are live and instructor-led, with 10 instructional hours at $3,000 per trainee. Send five people through one course and the tuition is $15,000, which is the annual Express cap, so up to $15,000 can come back if you are approved.
Neither. The Express application is filed online with Commonwealth Corporation, which administers the Workforce Training Fund Program for the state. The MassHire Greater Brockton Workforce Board is the regional workforce board for this area. It is a useful free resource for other hiring and training programs, but it does not run this grant.
Here is what the program rules settle. Owners cannot be counted as trainees. Trainees must be W-2 payroll employees, full or part time, who work in Massachusetts. So the two things to check for each relative are whether they are on W-2 payroll and whether they hold an ownership stake. If any of them owns part of the business, raise it on the 15 minute eligibility call and we will confirm how that is treated before you apply.
It does not rule out the company, but it limits who can take the course. 1099 contractors and temp workers cannot be counted as trainees. Your W-2 employees can: the office manager, dispatcher, estimator, bookkeeper and any field staff on payroll. The company also needs a physical Massachusetts location, owned or leased, and 100 or fewer Massachusetts W-2 employees.
