The Workforce Training Fund Express Program reimburses up to 100% of course cost, $3,000 per employee and $15,000 per company per year. Your business pays first. The Commonwealth pays you back if your application is approved.
In a family-owned Lawrence company, the same person often runs payroll, answers customers in English and Spanish, and keeps the production schedule current. There is no spare headcount and no training budget. Lawrence has many employers like that: food producers, manufacturers in renovated mill space along the Merrimack, healthcare offices, and distributors that chose the city for quick access to I-495 and I-93. The Workforce Training Fund Express Program serves companies of exactly that size, 100 or fewer Massachusetts W-2 employees.
Each course is 10 hours of live, instructor-led training at $3,000 per trainee. The state reimburses up to 100% of the course cost, up to $3,000 per employee per course and $15,000 per company per calendar year. Send five employees and tuition is $15,000, which matches the annual cap, so up to $15,000 can come back if your application is approved. You do pay the invoice first, and you pay your employees their regular wages while they train. Plan your cash flow around both.
What can the team do once the course is over?
You will also need a physical Massachusetts location and three documents. The checklist is on our Massachusetts AI training grant page. Help with the application is free, because training providers are not allowed to charge for it.
Most Lawrence businesses should begin with AI Enablement for Small Business Teams. It is the course for a mixed team: 2 hours a week for 5 weeks, up to 8 trainees. It suits a company where the office manager, the customer service lead and the shift supervisor all need the same practical skills.
If the pressure point is the back office, pick AI for Finance, Accounting and Payroll Teams. Family companies often have one or two people carrying invoicing, payroll and month-end close. Same format: 2 hours a week, 5 weeks, up to 8 trainees.
Food producers and manufacturers with someone who manages production, inventory or order data should consider Claude Code for Operations and Data Teams. It runs 2.5 hours a week for 4 weeks with no more than 6 trainees.
All three are live, instructor-led and 10 instructional hours. Tuition is $3,000 per trainee, and only W-2 employees who work in Massachusetts can be counted as trainees.
Ask us on the 15 minute eligibility call. We will not promise it on this page. What is settled: the courses are live and instructor-led, and only courses listed in the state's Express Course Directory qualify for reimbursement. If part of your team is more comfortable learning in Spanish, tell us on the call and we will give you a straight answer about what our training partner, a registered Express Program training provider, can accommodate.
Trainees must be W-2 payroll employees, full or part time, who work in Massachusetts. Owners cannot be counted as trainees. Neither can 1099 contractors or temp workers. The rules speak to payroll status and ownership, not to family ties. If a relative is both an employee and a part owner, bring it up on the eligibility call so it is checked before you apply.
Neither one. The employer files the Express application online with Commonwealth Corporation, the organization that administers the Workforce Training Fund Program for Massachusetts. The MassHire Merrimack Valley Workforce Board is the regional workforce board, and a good free resource when you are hiring or looking at other training programs. It does not run this grant, though. Help with the Express application itself is free.
