It's not the cheapest option in the market, and it's not trying to be — what it does better than anyone else is deeply integrate with Shopify's data model so you can build segments and automations based on actual purchase behavior, not just email opens.

Where It Excels

The Shopify integration is in a league of its own. Real-time sync of order data, browsing behavior, and customer lifetime value means you can build flows like "customer bought Product A more than 30 days ago but hasn't bought Product B" without touching a single line of code. We've seen abandoned cart flows on Klaviyo generate 15-25% of total email revenue for DTC clients — that's not a Klaviyo stat, that's what we've measured across our implementations.

The predictive analytics features — expected next order date, predicted CLV, churn risk — are genuinely useful for segmentation. They're not perfect, but they're good enough to meaningfully improve targeting over basic RFM segments. The flow builder is also well-designed; non-technical operators can manage it after initial setup.

Where It Falls Short

Pricing scales aggressively with list size. A client with 50,000 active profiles is looking at $720/month before SMS costs. That's fine if email is driving real revenue, but we've had clients where the list is mostly inactive subscribers inflating the bill. Klaviyo's profile-based pricing means you're paying for every contact whether you email them or not — list hygiene is essential.

Outside of ecommerce, Klaviyo's value proposition weakens significantly. If your client is B2B SaaS, the Shopify-centric features don't apply, and you're paying a premium for capabilities you won't use. We've also found that the SMS pricing can surprise clients — international rates especially get expensive fast.

We connect Klaviyo to n8n for advanced triggers that go beyond Klaviyo's native flow logic — things like syncing custom BigQuery segments back into Klaviyo lists, or triggering SMS based on shipping events from ShipStation. For reporting, we pipe Klaviyo campaign data into BigQuery for cross-channel attribution.
