5 AI Courses Massachusetts Will Reimburse Up to 100% (and Who They Fit)

Massachusetts will reimburse up to 100% of the cost of five live, instructor-led AI courses through the Workforce Training Fund Express Program, if your application is approved. Each course is 10 instructional hours and $3,000 per trainee. Employers with 100 or fewer Massachusetts W-2 employees can get back up to $15,000 per calendar year.

JMK Ventures offers these courses through our training partner, a registered Express Program training provider. You pay the tuition first, then you submit for reimbursement, and the Commonwealth reimburses you, the employer. Below is who each course is for, what your team should be able to do afterward, and how the seats fit under the cap.

The Workforce Training Fund Program is administered by Commonwealth Corporation, and the full rules are on its official program page. It is a state program, so the same terms apply from AI training grants in Springfield to AI training grants in Lowell. Only courses listed in the state's Express Course Directory qualify, so confirm the listing before you apply.

1. AI Enablement for Small Business Teams

Who it is for: a general team at a small company. Office managers, operations staff, sales and customer service. If you are not sure which of the five fits, start here.

What your team can do after: the goal is a shared baseline. Your people know what AI tools are good at and where they get things wrong. They can write a clear prompt, use AI on everyday work like drafting, summarizing and research, and they know which company data stays out of a public tool.

• Schedule: 2 hours a week for 5 weeks
• Class size: up to 8 trainees
• Cost: $3,000 per trainee
• Seats under the $15,000 cap: 5. A full class of 8 is $24,000 in tuition, and up to $15,000 of that can come back in one calendar year.

2. Claude Code for Operations and Data Teams

Who it is for: the people who keep your numbers and systems running. Operations leads, analysts, and the staff who build the reports, clean the exports and maintain the scripts. This is the most technical of the five.

What your team can do after: the goal is a team that can use Claude Code, Anthropic's coding tool, on routine technical work: cleaning and reshaping data, writing and fixing small scripts, automating a recurring report, and reviewing what the tool produced before anyone relies on it.

• Schedule: 2.5 hours a week for 4 weeks
• Class size: up to 6 trainees
• Cost: $3,000 per trainee
• Seats under the $15,000 cap: 5. A full class of 6 is $18,000 in tuition, so up to $15,000 can come back and $3,000 stays on your budget.

3. AI for Finance, Accounting and Payroll Teams

Who it is for: bookkeepers, staff accountants, controllers, accounts payable and receivable, and payroll administrators.

What your team can do after: the goal is a finance team that uses AI on the repetitive parts of the job and keeps the controls. That means drafting and summarizing, explaining variances, documenting procedures, and knowing which financial and payroll data should never be pasted into a public tool. The accuracy check stays with a person.

• Schedule: 2 hours a week for 5 weeks
• Class size: up to 8 trainees
• Cost: $3,000 per trainee
• Seats under the $15,000 cap: 5. A finance team of 5 or fewer fits inside the cap, so the full tuition can come back if approved.

4. AI for Field Service and Trades Businesses

Who it is for: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, general contracting and other service businesses. The seats are for dispatchers, estimators, service managers and office staff. One caution for this group: only W-2 payroll employees who work in Massachusetts count as trainees. 1099 subcontractors and temp workers do not, and neither does the owner.

What your team can do after: the goal is office and field leads who use AI for the paperwork around the job: estimates and proposals, job notes, customer follow-ups, scheduling messages, and written procedures for new hires.

• Schedule: 2 hours a week for 5 weeks
• Class size: up to 8 trainees
• Cost: $3,000 per trainee
• Seats under the $15,000 cap: 5. Training runs on paid time at regular wages, so pick the 5 people with the heaviest paperwork load.

5. AI for Professional Practices

Who it is for: firms that sell expertise: law, accounting, architecture, engineering, insurance and similar offices. The seats are for associates, paralegals, project staff, practice managers and administrators. Owners cannot be counted as trainees, so plan the seats around your W-2 staff.

What your team can do after: the goal is staff who can use AI for first drafts, document summaries, research and client communication, with clear rules on confidentiality and on checking every output before it reaches a client.

• Seats under the $15,000 cap: 5. To train a larger group, look at the General Program (grants from $10,000 to $200,000 with a 1-to-1 match).

How to choose, and what the grant will not pay for

Choose by team, not by tool. An employee cannot repeat the same or similar WTFP-funded training within five years, so if you want one person in two of these courses, raise it on the eligibility call before you apply.

The grant reimburses the course and nothing else. It does not pay for software subscriptions, consulting, coaching, employee wages, exam or certification fees, or travel. It also does not pay for implementation, meaning the work of applying the training to your own systems. The full eligibility rules are on our Massachusetts AI training grants page.

Questions we get

Who qualifies for state funded AI training in Massachusetts?

Under the Express Program, Massachusetts employers with 100 or fewer Massachusetts W-2 employees and a physical Massachusetts location can apply. Trainees must be W-2 payroll employees who work in Massachusetts. Larger employers that pay into the fund can look at the General Program, which offers grants from $10,000 to $200,000 with a 1-to-1 match.

How many employees can we train under the $15,000 cap?

Each of the five courses costs $3,000 per trainee. The Express Program caps reimbursement at $3,000 per employee per course and $15,000 per company per calendar year. That works out to 5 seats a year at up to 100% reimbursement, if approved. You can enroll more people, but tuition above the cap is not reimbursed under Express.

Can owners or contractors take the courses on the grant?

No. Owners, 1099 contractors and temp workers cannot be counted as trainees under the Express Program. Reimbursement applies to W-2 payroll employees, full or part time, who work in Massachusetts. For individual self-study, Massachusetts residents have free access to the Google AI Professional Certificate through the MA AI Hub. It is self-paced and separate from the Workforce Training Fund.
